Torsion of Non-Circular Bars and Shafts

Examples of Non-Circular
Cross-Sections

There are cases when shafts or bars are not circular and must withstand a torque. In those cases, there are very few closed form solutions. This is when numerical methods are needed. This section will use finite element method (FEM) to calculate the stresses in non-circular bars of any solid cross section. The method will be compared to the few known solutions, specifically, rectangular and elliptical cross sections (their derivation are omitted.
